Of novelty socks, Tomas Maier tops and man packs

Pack man The number of men sporting murses (yes, men's purses), totes and even clutch bags points to a worrying feminisation of the male bag. Whatever next? Men's bucket bags? The French-sounding baguette bags? The mildly offensively titled hobo bags? These are all real women's bags by the way. It's about time there was a ruggedly masculine backlash, and nothing says back to basics better than a backpack. Check out Herschel's range of nifty, practical yet stylish fare (pictured above; HK$1,100 each). Herschel is available at Urban Outfitters, Lab Concept, tel: 2118 2585.

For some reason, the most prevalent male archetype in pop culture today is the tall, charming Englishman. Don't believe us? Tom Hiddleston, Andrew Garfield, Eddie Redmayne and, of course, the one-man internet meme Benedict Cumberbatch are everywhere at the moment. All four have perfected the casual but smart look and we have a sneaking suspicion they shop at Hackett, a brand that has never wavered in catering to the raffish gent. We love the look of tweed plaid suit (HK$19,800) with the boho blue scarf (HK$1,800), roll-neck jumper (HK$2,200) and V-neck jumper (HK$1,700; all above left). We also thoroughly recommend the more outré look of plaid blazer (HK$7,000), cord trousers (HK$2,000), green wool scarf (HK$1,800), V-neck jumper (HK$1,700) and roll-neck jumper (HK$2,200; all above right). Hackett is in The Landmark, Central, tel: 2885 0970.

Put a sock in it What could be more meta than giving your loved ones a pair of socks in their Christmas stocking? Be clever and do exactly that, with Topman’s novelty socks (above left and right; HK$49 per pair). They work as a lazy-but-it’s-OK gift for friends, but honestly, we might snap them up as a snazzy seasonal accessory for ourselves. Topman is available at Lab Concept, Queensway Plaza, 93 Queensway, Admiralty, tel: 2118 5353.
