Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez on Mong Kok and motivation

American actress Gina Rodriguez, the star of Jane the Virgin - a television series set in Miami about a hard-working, religious Latina woman who is artificially inseminated by accident - talks about breaking stereotypes.

"It's crazy. It makes me feel I have to keep my head down and my feet on the ground … like I need to work harder to be deserving of that title. When I feel pressure I turn it into motivation."

"I wish I was more like her. She doesn't really care about power or status. Jane sees the world through a simple lens, she wants love and family and her dreams to come true - don't we all? But outside of that, I think I'm a little tougher than she is, I grew up a little rougher."

"I originally came to Macau, for the Manny Pacquiao fight, because my father was refereeing. I decided to fly out from LA for my dad's last fight before he retires. Then CBS asked me if I'd like to be in Hong Kong [to do some publicity] and I was like, 'Yes!'"

"We went to Mong Kok and all the lights reminded me of New York City. And we saw the protest - I love it when people fight for their rights, that's a beautiful thing. I think Central is going to end up being my favourite place; it's so new world-old world mixed together and I love that."

"My family. I have two older sisters, one is an investment banker and the other is a doctor. I grew up relatively poor and I saw my family make something out of nothing. I saw them fight for what they love, I saw them try and try and try again. That's what gave me the strength because acting is tough. People tell you, 'No, you're not tall enough; you're not pretty enough,' and to hear that so often does something to your heart. But I have these two women ahead of me who say, 'Don't listen to that, here's your heart.' As an actor, I'd say Meryl Streep. That woman is amazing; she transforms and really creates a whole life around a character."
