Jewellery designer Sidney Chung goes from edgy to angelic
Daniel Kong

What’s the story? Having started out as a doorto- door, wholesale jewellery salesman almost 30 years ago, self-taught designer Sidney Chung shifted his focus from sales to design when the market tumbled following the Sars outbreak in 2003. Chung’s first collection, a small series of pieces with marquis-cut diamonds, defied the downturn to quickly sell out. Since then, Chung, who focuses on diamonds and 18-carat gold, has blossomed as a designer.
Why we love it: the pieces are elaborate, elegant and versatile – hardly surprising, given the designer says he is inspired by anything and everything. While some pieces have a modern edge others are delicately angelic.
What we’d pick: the Centipede 18-carat, rose-gold, multiband, full-finger diamond ring (above left; HK$16,900) is unusual and subtly beautiful. The V-Luxe 18-carat gold diamond ring (HK$63,900) and the Meta Diamond whitegold ring (both above right; HK$95,500) contrast the classic elements of pear-cut diamonds with a sharp geometric form. The Embrace rose-gold diamond earring (above centre; HK$24,800), meanwhile, would definitely turn a few heads.
