Game changers Despite our initial scepticism, luxe trainers are no longer simply overpriced bits of leather with studs, metal plates or “crazy” prints. They’re actually quite good. We love the simplicity of Parisian shoemaker JM Weston’s tennis shoes, which are made with the very best leather in designs that don’t need to scream for attention. There are many colours to choose from but we love the tennis shoe in green calfskin (above right; HK$5,100) and navy suede (above left; HK$5,350). JM Weston is in Hutchinson House, 10 Harcourt Road, Central, tel: 2234 7288.

Shore things Speaking of surfwear, you’re going to want something for up top and we recommend Mollusk tees from California. Inspired by vintage designs and all made in the Golden State, Mollusk tees (right and far right; HK$288 each) have that lived-in, sun-bleached vibe that’ll make you look like an old beach hand and not a newbie with sand in your eyes (actually, we can’t guarantee any of that). Mollusk is also available at www.mrporter.com.

Give me a break With the Point Break remake edging closer (they’ve cast Ray Winstone as the Gary Busey character, which is either the greatest idea ever, or the worst), The goods is getting into surfing – and not armed robbery. We won’t be buying a wetsuit anytime soon as we’re not that committed, but board shorts are a must and we recommend Hawaiian brand M.Nii. We like the palm tree-print shorts (above left; HK$1,054), which will turn heads on the beach and out to sea, but, if you want something more demure, there’s also the Clubmaster-style shorts (above right; also HK$1,054). M.Nii is available at www.mrporter.com.
