What's on TV: Recover from 'Chocolate Perfection' with 'The World's Best Diet'
Mark Peters

My name is Mark and I am a chocoholic. It's been almost four minutes since my last square. Green & Black's' milk chocolate with sea salt - if you haven't tried it, it is to die for. I accept that the first step towards recovery is admitting you have a problem but, honestly, I don't. Augustus Gloop is my hero.

According to people who like to scoff choccy bars, raw cocoa is one of the most antioxidant-rich foods on the planet and helps to neutralise free radicals in the body. The last thing I need is free radicals playing silly buggers inside me, so for now I'm more than happy to live with my chocolatey burden.

Two-star Michelin chef Michel Roux Jnr (above) knows what I'm talking about. The man has a passion for the dark stuff and in Chocolate Perfection (TVB Pearl, tomorrow at 8pm), he's as happy as the proverbial pig in poop. Roux begins his quest to find the perfect chocolate in France, where his Michelin-starred chef father was born. From the raw cocoa bean to the most refined and unusual chocolate creations (an edible stiletto, anyone?), the chef explores the history and art of chocolate making by shovelling tons of the rich silky goodness down his throat in the name of research. C'est une vie dure, Mr Roux!

Even if you're one of those unfortunate people who are unburdened by a sweet tooth, Chocolate Perfection is worth watching purely to see chef and artist Patrick Roger's stunning chocolate sculptures. It's no wonder the Aztecs called this the "food of gods".

On that fateful morning when you do wake up to the realisation that polishing off a Twix and half a Toblerone is not the healthiest way to start the day, you're probably going to be thankful for The World's Best Diet (Thursday, 9.30pm, TVB Pearl). We're not talking about Gwyneth Paltrow's latest fad for chugging down penguin placenta smoothies, or whatever she's into these days. No, this is about looking at 50 diets from around the world, so we can learn how to eat better. A team of dieticians and doctors, along with presenters Jimmy Doherty and Kate Quilton, rank the diets from worst to best. Beginning this week, at the bottom of the list, we head to an island paradise that is home to some of the world's most obese people. The locals here suffer from the highest rate of diabetes deaths and their killer diet consists largely of processed white rice, canned vegetables and cheap tinned meat. Welcome to the Marshall Islands.

Coming in at No49 is Russia, purely for the one item on everyone's shopping list: vodka. The consequence of this integral part of their culture is that a quarter of Russian men die before the age of 55, mainly due to liver disease, alcohol poisoning and drunken fights. But at least they keep us entertained by falling off heavy machinery on YouTube.
