Who started it? The sister of style icon and fashion editor Giovanna Battaglia, Italian handbag designer Sara Battaglia grew up in a family of creative types – her mother is a sculptor and her brother an art dealer – and went on to study the arts at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan. She honed her craft working with fellow accessories designer Gabrielecorto Moltedo in Florence before launching her eponymous label in 2009. Since then she has collaborated with high-profile brands such as Moncler while her bags have become a favourite with fashion insiders including Miroslava Duma, Anna Dello Russo and Rachel Zoe.
Why we love it: after a few seasons of minimalism, Battaglia’s bold and maximalist styles are a breath of fresh air. Colour is key so expect plenty of bright shades (yellow and red are features of the autumnwinter collection) on plush leathers, all made in Italy. These are accented with graphic details, such as fringing and brass hardware – both Sara Battaglia signatures. Some intricate styles take more than 70 hours to complete and the autumn-winter collection is inspired by the timeless creations of 1970s designer Andre Courreges.
What we’d pick: fringing transforms both the Teresa clutch (top right; HK$8,300) and Jasmine bucket bag (above left; HK$10,500) into fun and fashionable musthaves. If you are after a more classic style, there’s the structured Cindy bag (above right; HK$15,500) in patent calf leather.
