Style radar: Theory, Scotch & Soda, and J.Crew's New Balance venture

Abid Rahman patrols the racks and shelves so you don't have to

Thicker than water Scotch & Soda's premium line, Amsterdam Blauw, is all about the big blue this autumn, with hats, jackets, jeans and tees inspired by life on the high seas. It's probably too warm to be thinking about the heavy duty pea coats, so we recommend these nautical but nice graphic-print tees (above; HK$650 each). Scotch & Soda is in IFC Mall, Central.

Theory is one of those strange brands that you think is Scandinavian, given the logo and clothes design, but is actually American, yet owned by Japanese fashion behemoth Uniqlo. And just to make things more confusing, Belgian Olivier Theyskens was, until recently, the creative director. The very international make-up of Theory is reflected in the very globalist look of the clothes. We love the sophisticated, minimalist all-grey ensemble of jacket (HK$5,150), jumper (HK$2,800), trousers (HK$3,200) and gloves (HK$1,250; all above left). Theory kills it with the grey thing, but it is pretty nifty with black, too, as seen on this look: gilet (HK$2,600), jumper (HK$1,750), white shirt (HK$1,950), trousers (HK$2,400) and gloves (HK$1,250; all above right). Theory is in IFC Mall.

Shine of the times One of the great things about Paul Smith the brand is its willingness to try things that aren't strictly "fashion". It doesn't always work but when it does it is pretty great, think the recent bicycles and accessories. To that list can be added the Paul Smith for Anglepoise lamp (right; HK$2,100), now in its second edition, which takes a classic design and adds a whole dose of colour and cool. Paul Smith x Anglepoise is available at Paul Smith, The Landmark, Central.

Mental balance From your nan to your nerdy cousin who loves cosplay, everyone is wearing New Balance these days. Even J.Crew is in on the action, having teamed up with Boston’s finest to produce the special edition 996 in fetching Neptune blue (below; HK$1,800). J.Crew is at 9 On Lan Street, Central.
