Run the Jewels
Mass Appeal

Released as a free download and arriving a few weeks earlier than expected, the third album from the duo of Michael “Killer Mike” Render and Jamie “El-P” Meline was an early Christmas present for fans of top-drawer hip hop. With both members now in their 40s, Run the Jewels blazed a trail for rap’s young guns with their debut, in 2013, a second instalment of high-calibre beats and intelligent rhymes following a year later. Thankfully, this is not the sound of two elder MCs resting on their laurels. Full of volatile beats and sharp, timely lyrics (“Went to war with the Devil and Shaytan/ He wore a bad toupee and a spray tan”), RTJ3 sees the duo again joined by ball-of-fury frontman of Rage Against the Machine, Zack de la Rocha (if only for one verse of the album’s fabulous closer, Kill Your Masters), along with saxophonist-for-hire Kamasi Washington, rappers BOOTS and Danny Brown (who seems to turn up on pretty much every decent hip hop album these days), and TV on the Radio’s multitalented frontman, Tunde Adebimpe.
