A little birdsong. A cat meows. Could life get any more delightful? It can, and does, when the voice doing the talking belongs to Helen Mirren. Weirdly, her combination of propriety and sauciness is perfect for The Tale of Kitty-in-Boots, newly discovered in London’s Victoria and Albert Museum.

Beatrix Potter fanatics will enjoy the guest appearances by heroic Mrs Tiggy-Winkle and Peter Rabbit. Me? I just loved the way Mirren purrs. The 17-minute story is fleshed out by five Potter classics – including Peter Rabbit and Mrs Tiggy-Winkle – read by English actress Anna Friel. Her tender, beautifully paced narration carries the day. If there’s a hint of veneration in her voice, it only increases the charm. Joy unconfined.
