If you aspire to minimalism, this book is something you could do without – along with those old DVDs, photos and tax records. But perhaps that is being churlish, especially if you purchase Essential as an audio- or e-book (although the authors also urge regular digital clearing). Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus have gained a following not just by urging people to eliminate, pare back and let go. They say that minimalists don’t necessarily focus on having less, but the opposite: they make room for more freedom by clearing life’s path of clutter. That includes getting rid of fake friends and putting an end to any attempt to be cool. The advice, while sensible, is nothing your mother couldn’t tell you.
