Rooftop jacuzzi, bold yellow sofa and a faux-leather wall give penthouse apartment in Hong Kong a contemporary feel

Many developers like to stamp their mark on their properties so even if a flat is bought off-plan, the interior will still reflect their vision rather than the homeowner being able to dictate what they prefer.
While Hong Kong couple Charles and Gloria Chan and their son, Marcus, nine, loved the Lohas Park location, views and layout of their new 1,400 sq ft (130 square metres) penthouse in Tseung Kwan O, in Hong Kong’s New Territories, they wanted something more striking than the hotel-style interior it came with.
Pal Pang Yu-yan, the founder of Another Design International, was the designer they turned to for help. Having renovated a previous home for the Chans almost a decade ago, he knew their likes and dislikes.
“We weren’t given the chance to change anything [structural] but I tried to modify my designs to ensure as little waste as possible,” says Pang, who was recently named one of four finalists in the Residential Interior of the Year category in magazine Designerati’s Design Awards.
“I kept the kitchen and two bathrooms as they were but changed the living and dining areas as well as all the lighting and storage in the bedrooms and study.”
Pang went for a contemporary style with retro undertones – a look that would stand out but not differ too wildly from the rooms left untouched. To transform the living and dining area, he laid geometric marble flooring, which makes an unforgettable and immediate statement.
