I visited a few maternity fashion shops but was frightened off by the prices! I’d heard some casual brands might help but I couldn’t see anything nice at Gap, etc.

The Dictator: Ugh. We cannot be mean to women in your condition, can we? Well, that’s no fun. Let’s begin where you left off. The Gap does not carry its maternity line in the Hong Kong stores, however, as the staff would have told you, had you asked, you can order online at Gap.com. There is wide collection of all the basics you’ll need, from tees and nursing tops to dresses and jeans, with a heap of choices in between (HK$179 to HK$507). You can even choose between a full or half belly band on the trousers. Ingeniously, the site allows you to search by not only product and occasion but also by trimester, which you’ll appreciate as your body balloons, oops, I mean “grows”. Time for some good news! H&M does offer its maternity line in Hong Kong but you might not have seen it because only one store sells it (Silvercord, 30 Canton Road). There, you’ll find more fashionable essentials (HK$99.90 to HK$349). The Hong Kong selection is quite limited and sizes sell out quickly, so consider shopping the extended range via another country’s online store. On the WWWs, check out budgetsaving collections by Asos, Topshop, Primark and Next.
I saw a woman with an evening bag I loved at a New Year’s Eve party. It had a sort of bracelet attached instead of a shoulder strap. My friend called it a “wristlet”. Where can I buy one?
Shall I Wrist It?, Sai Kung
The Dictator rules: Between you and your friend, it’s no wonder you never get anywhere. Must-have designer wristlets at the moment have more of a strap than a bracelet, leaving your hands free to do other things. The fabulous Givenchy Triangle wristlet is made in a pyramid from magnolia mothprinted leather and is held by an adjustable leather strap (HK$11,600; Elements, 1 Austin Road, Tsim Sha Tsui). Then there is the standard little rectangular zip variety. The Row makes one with a beautiful tassel hanging from a black braided wrist strap on its burnt red ponyhair zipped clutch (now HK$9,950 from HK$19,900; Lane Crawford, Canton Road, Tsim Sha Tsui). Shanghai Tang adds a pretty twist, using its distinctive cloud quilted leather in a variety of solid colours (HK$2,680; Elements). Moschino’s version has a gold tone chain strap and zips, and its leather body is embossed with the brand name (HK$3,000; Elements). Jimmy Choo has a number of classic hardcase, rectangular clutches with gold coloured chains for the wrist (HK$9,490; Gateway Arcade, Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui). If you had a bangle in mind, then see the one attached to Valentino’s studded Rockstud clutch (HK$13,200; Gateway Arcade). BangleBag.com makes exactly that at affordable prices, from leather, suede and patterned fabrics for about HK$295 to HK$349. Now, did that fill in what was missing in your life? I didn’t think so.
