Just Checking, The Peak
You're beyond help. In fashion, you have to take risks. Otherwise, stick to the plain Jane you know. Large prints of any kind draw attention. Are you ready? Then let's begin with the designer on everyone's checklist: Stella McCartney. Her "transparent" checks, overlapping semi-sheer cottons that create the illusion of a check print, are ingenious. Try it on for size in a yellow and white top (HK$4,880); or a traffic-halting one-shoulder, fitted maxi dress in white and green (HK$7,610). She's also done a solid green and black plaid, including trousers with jogger-style ankle cuffs and a draped midi skirt (HK$5,750 to HK$6,190). She put the models in head-to-toe looks with clashing colour contrasts, but I wouldn't do that in real life. Scandinavian-style boutique Vein has some fabulously enlarged glen-plaid pieces in black and white from Back by Ann-Sofie Back, including a relaxed, short-sleeved top and knee-length dress (HK$2,300 to HK$2,700; Lee Gardens One, Causeway Bay, tel: 2528 4988). Céline, whose Hong Kong market bag-like check caught our eye circa autumn-winter 2013, has a few this season. There are wide-legged trousers in beige check and a cropped jacket in green and black check (HK$14,000 to HK$16,500).
