I've had a picture of a bag that I clipped from a magazine on my desk for weeks. I need it! It's the shape of a semi-circle and has a shoulder strap. The closest I've found were curved saddle bags, but they're not quite right. Would you know where to find one?

Going Around, Central

The Dictator rules: Clever. You cut out the picture and failed to keep the caption, which would have credited the designer of said bag. It sounds like you've been staring at a type of bag called a half moon, the most snapped of which lately has been by none other than Victoria Beckham. The crescent-shaped bag has a relatively wide, adjustable shoulder strap and is made in Italy from smooth calf leather in either camel brown or black. Oh, and it goes for the not insignificant sum of HK$20,280. The bag includes a removable suede coin purse that could pass as a cute clutch on its own. Calvin Klein Collection has a circular faceted saddle bag (HK$11,900) that is as beautifully rounded as the one you're pining for. You might have seen it in one of the brand's recent print ads featuring sultry model/actress Abbey Lee (Mad Max: Fury Road) totally bare on top except for the bag over her chest, with the tagline, "I hypnotize in #mycalvins". No, I'm not suggesting you copy her look. A.P.C turns the style upside down in its own chic, French way (HK$3,700), only slightly smaller than the above examples, and with the curved end on top. Use it as a shoulder or cross-body bag by adjusting the buckle on the strap.

I like but have been a bit shy of those extra-large check patterns. I loved the amah bag prints that came out last year, I think, but I wasn't confident enough to give that a try. This year, I'd like to give big checks a go. Help?

Just Checking, The Peak

The Dictator: You're beyond help. In fashion, you have to take risks. Otherwise, stick to the plain Jane you know. Large prints of any kind draw attention. Are you ready? Then let's begin with the designer on everyone's checklist: Stella McCartney. Her "transparent" checks, overlapping semi-sheer cottons that create the illusion of a check print, are ingenious. Try it on for size in a yellow and white top (HK$4,880); or a traffic-halting one-shoulder, fitted maxi dress in white and green (HK$7,610). She's also done a solid green and black plaid, including trousers with jogger-style ankle cuffs and a draped midi skirt (HK$5,750 to HK$6,190). She put the models in head-to-toe looks with clashing colour contrasts, but I wouldn't do that in real life. Scandinavian-style boutique Vein has some fabulously enlarged glen-plaid pieces in black and white from Back by Ann-Sofie Back, including a relaxed, short-sleeved top and knee-length dress (HK$2,300 to HK$2,700; Lee Gardens One, Causeway Bay, tel: 2528 4988). Céline, whose Hong Kong market bag-like check caught our eye circa autumn-winter 2013, has a few this season. There are wide-legged trousers in beige check and a cropped jacket in green and black check (HK$14,000 to HK$16,500).
