The once niche New York trend has become a dominant form of culture and a huge influence on high fashion, but as hip hop hits a half-century, there are still those not getting their dues.

When Hong Kong sent models and garment makers to Paris to put on a ready-to-wear show in 1981, French manufacturers expressed their dismay and tried to halt the show. The pret-a-porter show was a success.
