“When the popular American singing star Pat Boone arrives on March 25, he will have a very busy time for he has only 24 hours to spend here,” reported the South China Morning Post on March 15, 1964.

“During this time he will have to: Give two performances at the City Hall on March 26 for the Diamond Music Co; attend a press conference; rehearse with the Diamond Studio Orchestra; attend a reception; face Television cameras; visit the little girl he and his wife adopted through the Foster Parents Plan; buy gifts and make suits; rush to Kai Tak Airport after the City Hall performances to catch his plane.”

When Boone finally arrived as planned on March 25, the Post reported the next day that “hundreds of screaming teenage fans mobbed the American singing star [and] police were called in to hold back the crowds of autograph hunters who surged round their idol as he emerged after clearing customs.

“Later, at a hotel press conference, Mr Boone got the same treatment – this time from newspaper photographers. Cameramen pushed and jostled each other and climbed on to chairs and tables as they shot hundreds of photographs of the singer. Reporters forced their way to the front of the throng.

“‘This is amazing’ Mr Boone cried. ‘They just keep taking pictures’.” On the 27th, the Post reviewed Boone’s show as following “in the footsteps of Bing Crosby [ …] Starting with a selection of ballads, he went through his whole repertoire, until he finally returned for his encore.”
