“Oh good, now I have time to see some of the world,” is probably not how most people will have greeted the prospect of lockdown or quarantine, but as more national parks, galleries, museums and theatres put their rugged beauty, exhibitions and shows online in response to restrictive coronavirus measures, so there’s more to visit from the comfort of your favourite armchair.

And hang on to that seat, because now you can go on safari, too.

Luxury travel company andBeyond and wildlife broadcaster WildEarth have teamed up to lead two personalised African game drives every day in April that would-be travellers can view from home, free of charge.

Each excursion will last around three hours and will be live-streamed on YouTube and FaceTime from the andBeyond Ngala Private Game Reserve (which shares unfenced borders with the Kruger National Park) and the Djuma Private Game Reserve (part of the Sabi Sand Game Reserve), in South Africa.

The drives will be non-scripted and hosted by field guides. A director in a control room will move between three or four live feeds to cover the action as it unfolds, and viewers can interact with the safari hosts and have their questions answered in real-time, just as if they were really in the back of that 4X4. If it’s a windy day in your hometown, open the window for the full open-sided-jeep effect.
