The novelty hasn’t worn off yet, has it? The world is again the Hongkonger’s oyster – well, the Hongkonger who can afford the ballooning airfares, that is.

Travel services websites were bombarded with searches and bookings almost before the numbers “0+3” had left the lips of the head of the city’s government, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu.

Trip.com said it saw an increase in flight orders of 400 per cent on the two days following the September 23 announcement of an end to hotel quarantine for travellers entering Hong Kong compared with the previous weekend.

The most popular destinations, to absolutely nobody’s surprise, were Bangkok, Seoul, Tokyo, Singapore and Osaka. Low whistles greeted the news that the Japanese cities saw 1,385 per cent and 7,300 per cent more online action, respectively, but that wasn’t really surprising given Japan had just made a big reopening announcement of its own.

The re-establishment of air links between Hong Kong and its denizens’ favourite cities calls for a feast, and where better to celebrate than in the finest restaurants as decided by those discerning users of the TripAdvisor website?

Asian establishments don’t figure highly on TripAdvisor’s recently released global Best Restaurants chart – we’re guessing that’s because the region has experienced more Covid disruption in the past 12 months than others – but a worthy few shine through.
