Destinations known | Visit Taiwan before war breaks out? Overseas media obsess over the island, which nevertheless remains charming and relaxed
- Visit Taiwan for a carpe diem holiday before war hits the island, say some Western media, in reports that attract contempt on social media
- Meanwhile, a tunnel dug to help North Korea invade South Korea has been voted TripAdvisor’s third best Asian tourist experience

Britain’s Telegraph newspaper seems to have made up its mind; war is coming to Taiwan – although there’s probably still time to squeeze in a holiday before the shooting starts.
Earlier this month, the newspaper ran a travel article under the headline, “On holiday in the next epicentre of geopolitical tension”.
Ukraine, presumably, is the current epicentre of geopolitical tension, so for Taiwan to be “the next”, The Telegraph must be expecting a further deterioration in cross-strait relations.
The article begins in an unusual place for a tourist.

“Last month, I found myself in Hsinchu Science Park, half an hour by high-speed train southwest of Taipei,” writes the author, Zoe Strimpel.
“Hsinchu is the home of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry […] ground zero for global supply of all the chips that make all our devices work.”
