On Pedder spring/summer collection launch cocktail with Sophia Webster

On Pedder, New World Tower, Central

Happenings: On Pedder’s flagship store in Central was abuzz with enthusiastic and especially wellheeled fashionistas trying to get their hands on the latest spring/summer collection. One of the most talked about accessories designers, Sophia Webster, flew in from London especially for the event. Webster, a protégé of famous designer Nicholas Kirkwood, obliged cheerfully to her photo duties and was seen mingling with fans at her Asia debut. Models posed like dolls in gift boxes.

Celebrity guests, such as Winnie Yeung, also had their Barbie moments posing for pictures. We spotted many shoe aficionados holding footwear in one hand and a Champagne glass in the other. Attended by Vivian Chen

 with Sophia Webster:
  • What was it like working with Nicholas Kirkwood and why go solo?
It has definitely been a good learning curve. And also because his brand is pretty young, it’s been a great experience. When I first started working with him, we agreed that I would work for him for two years and then I’d start my own brand. I have always planned this.

  • Where do you get your inspirations?
The shoes were made in Brazil, so I spent a lot of time there. Everything is so colourful and vibrant in Brazil. The houses are all painted in pastel colours, so it’s a really inspiring place. The place gave me a lot of energy and my collection shows it. When I don’t have any inspirations, I just doodle, until I have something interesting on my sketch pad.

  • Do you work differently as a woman designer?
I like to offer different heel heights. Nothing in the collection has heels over four inches because, as a woman, I know it’s impossible to walk in them, unless they’re platforms.

  • Tell us about your spring/summer collection.
This season’s theme is the doll house. I think it’s an interesting way to showcase the shoes. For the next season, I’m doing a unicorn theme.

  • Do you have any guilty pleasures like we do with high heels?
Trash TV. Keeping Up With The Kardashians. When I was in Brazil, the only channel I could understand was E! I kind of got into the Kardashians.
