Kelly Hoppen continues to wow with her simplistic and elegant creations

Joanne Lam

Author, TV personality and, first and foremost, interior designer Kelly Hoppen has made a name for herself in the design world.
The British designer started her career at 16, decorating a family friend’s kitchen, and has since put her stamp on homes, yachts and jets of private and celebrity clients, including David and Victoria Beckham, and Martin Shaw.
The Kelly Hoppen brand reflects the designer’s multidisciplinary success, and the ranges include home and hotel furniture, lighting, fabrics and paints, and wallpaper and wall art. Available around the world, including at Hong Kong’s Indigo Living, Hoppen’s lines evoke her simplistic yet timelessly elegant aesthetics.
Q: Who is your design hero and why?
A: Tom Ford opened my eyes to something new by creating the spaces in his film A Single Man, [in which Ford had the chance to style the set as well as direct the film]. I would love to do a film interior set.
Q: When travelling, what are you most inspired by?
A: I love travelling to Asia, as I get inspired by the East-meets-West concept. When I am travelling it does not matter what I am doing – whether I am talking to someone in a place or attending a design show, I am always inspired.
Q: What is the best piece of design advice you ever received?
A: I live by the motto: “Nothing is too big, and nothing is big enough.” It keeps me focused.
Q: How would you describe your aesthetics?
A: Neutrals form the base of my designs. They are calming and harmonious colours.
Colour can have a very evocative effect on your emotions, so it is important to keep things as harmonious as you can.
Q: Which is your favourite space to decorate?
A: I love decorating all rooms, but I suppose my favourite room is the bedroom, as this is where people can truly relax.
Q: How do you give a room character or a voice?
A: People now want their homes to look like they have lived there for years, slightly lived in and a bit creased, but with a defined edginess to it.
