The skincare solution is no longer designed to blend in: now there are colourful and playful options galore, with Bella Hadid, Florence Pugh and Anne Hathaway among their fans

Not long ago, a pimple patch was the kind of thing you applied alone in the bathroom, hoping it would quietly do its job overnight before anyone had to know about it. Then Gen Z started wearing them out, celebrities started getting papped in them, and suddenly they were a thing. Which brings us to April, when Justin Bieber designed a mushroom-shaped one for his wife Hailey’s skincare brand Rhode, timed to his Coachella headline slot. He sold the patches at a festival activation in the desert – which probably says more about where the beauty category stands in 2026 than anything else.

The material inside every pimple patch, hydrocolloid, has been around since the 1960s, and was originally used in dressings for superficial open wounds. The technology was commercialised in the 80s, and dermatologists soon began using it on facial dermatitis and acne. By the 2010s, over-the-counter pimple patches had become common. Korean skincare brand CosRx’s Acne Pimple Master Patch was an early template: thin, translucent and effective, and built on the premise that you’d never know it was there.

“The term hydrocolloid refers to materials that retain moisture,” explains Dr Amy Bandy, a California-based plastic and reconstructive surgeon with her own practice. Pressing a patch onto a surfaced blemish triggers the material to draw fluid and debris up from the pore. “The patch creates a closed environment at the site of the skin lesion, protecting it from friction and contact with bacteria,” she adds.

Dr Olga Bachilo, a plastic surgeon and the founder of Texas-based Glamour Plastic Surgery and Med Spa, says the colour change in pimple patches is the most misunderstood part of the process.

“The white colour that people see after sleeping in a patch is the hydrocolloid gel swelling with fluid absorbed into it. It is not clinically related to the removal of pus,” she explains. If the patch stays clear, there was probably not a lot of fluid on the surface to begin with, she adds.

Pimple patches are also great for the physical barrier they provide. Covering a blemish is one of the more reliable ways to stop yourself from picking at it, which is where a lot of acne scarring actually comes from. “It has been shown that hydrocolloid patches decrease manipulation of lesions, accelerate healing times and prevent irritation caused by constant picking,” Bandy notes. That alone may make the case for them, even on days when there’s no white patch to show for it.

Patches only really work, however, on pimples that have something to draw out. A whitehead, a popped zit, anything surfaced – totally. A deep cystic blemish sitting under the skin with no visible head – not so much. “Cystic acne occurs deep in the dermis, and a patch on top of it does not get at the root of the problem,” says Bachilo. “Those who suffer from hormonal or cystic acne require a completely different clinical approach.” Bandy agrees: “It would appear that hydrocolloid patches are incapable of reducing inflammation originating at that point,” she says, though she notes there may be some slight reduction in symptoms.
