Fame and celebrity

Stars – including Beyoncé, who was a short-term vegan – have a history of sparking controversy with candid comments on ideas, habits and hobbies that often jar with the public

Whether it’s Jimin, from K-pop boy band BTS, wearing a T-shirt showing the atomic bomb in Hiroshima, or Chinese celebrities expressing their views of Hong Kong’s anti-extradition bill protests, celebrities seem to be much more open to eschewing the company line and expressing their opinions these days – even if it means getting embroiled in controversy.

In the spirit of #unpopularopinions, we’ve decided to take a look at some of the most surprising views held by celebrities. From strange diets to even stranger politics, these opinionated stars make our list.

Jessica Biel and anti-vaccinations

Despite arguing that she is not necessarily against using vaccinations, American actress Jessica Biel lobbied alongside a prominent anti-vaccine activist against a California Senate Bill. The Bill, SB 276, revolves around delaying or withholding vaccines because of a medical condition.

Many people took to social media to voice their outrage at Biel using her platform to promote “anti-vaxxers”, but the celebrity, who has a four-year-old son, spoke up to clarify her political stance.

On Instagram, the 37-year-old actress said: “I am not against vaccinations and I also support families having the right to make educated medical decisions for their children alongside their physicians.”

Although well-intentioned, the star’s position still gave “anti-vaxxers” an opportunity to jump on the celebrity’s social forum and advocate their own anti-vaccination cause.

Vince Vaughn and gun control

In a 2015 interview with GQ magazine, American actor Vince Vaughn spoke at length about the right of Americans to own a gun, particularly in schools to prevent mass shootings.
