R&B singer Ciara hosted the latest edition of the American Music Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday. Besides jaw-dropping performances by Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez alike, it was thrilling to see what the stars wore on the red carpet. The fashion extravaganza was packed with trendsetters and their trophy-worthy outfits included thigh-high slit designs and gorgeous vintage pieces from previous collections of designers. Some, however, completely missed the point, sartorially speaking. Here is our verdict on the style winners. Compared to the dazzling jewellery and the outfit she wore while performing, we are not a big fan of Selena Gomez’s strapless green dress, which dwarfed the young singer. Taylor Swift smashed Michael Jackson’s award record at the AMAs Did Constance Wu just watch the animation film Ne Zha and decide to do a meme? Each part of Canadian singer Shania Twain’s ensemble could be flattering, but there’s something about the champagne satin and the black tulle combo that doesn’t match. Together (with the untidy hairstyle) it looks frumpy. No red carpet is fun without Billy Porter making a dramatic entrance, from being a gilded, winged Egyptian pharaoh at the Met Gala to donning a tuxedo gown at the 2019 Oscars. The Pose star opted for an outfit from American designer Thom Browne’s spring/summer 2020 collection at this year’s AMA, and finished it with a futuristic headpiece from Stephen Jones Millinery and an Oscar Heyman ring. He gets the thumbs up for this elegant, well-styled look. Inside 9 crazy rich celebrities’ New York City homes Taylor Swift channelled jazz glamour in the high-slit dress from Julien Macdonald, matched with over-knee Blade boots by Casadei. She completed the look with jewellery from Lorraine Schwartz and Ofira. Singer Lil Nas X showed how to dress gender-fluidly while being stylish. The rapper brings us back to the daring neon 90s in a Christopher John Rogers suit, in contrast with a gloved, zebra-pattern shirt. We adore the square-toed heels from United Nude and how he accessorised with dapper earrings by Sophia Brand. Camila Cabello showed how to dress like a modern-day sexy goddess with the nude Oscar de la Renta dress, while boyfriend Shawn Mendes looked dapper in a Paul Smith suit. The red carpet sometimes desperately needs fresh styles to spice it up, which is what Billie Eilish brought with her risk-taking, street-fashion Burberry menswear ensemble from the British label’s spring 2020 collection. Why are K-pop awards MAMA skipping Hong Kong this year? We love Katherine Langford’s make-up with eye shadow to match the bold red Rodarte gown. Halsey struck a pose in a floral gown from Marc Jacobs’ spring 2020 collection. Dua Lipa dazzled in shocking pink gown from Miu Miu, delicately paired with black platform heels. Diplo oozed wild west fashion in a bespoke MCM camel suit. Kelsea Ballerini returned to Gucci’s autumn 2016 collection for her sequinned suit. Christina Aguilera stunned observers in a Jean Paul Gaultier gown with attached hoodies, which comes from the French designer’s autumn 2017 couture collection. Maya Hawke – Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke’s daughter – mesmerised in a belted dress from Dior Couture’s autumn/winter 2020 collection. Ciara hosted and commanded attention throughout the night in a colt blue power suit with exaggerated shoulders from Balmain. Want more stories like this? Sign up here .
