JuJu Chan’s fans hail her as “the female Bruce Lee”. It’s easy to see why, as she’s skilled in karate, kung fu, judo, and a host of other fighting styles. She’s appearing alongside Nicolas Cage in the upcoming movie Jiu Jitsu, and performed her own stunts in the Netflix series Wu Assassins. She’s worked with stars like Donnie Yen and Max Zhang. Here are some more things you probably didn’t know about the 30-year-old action star.

1. She’s mathematically minded

Chan has a bachelor’s degree in computer science and mathematics, with honours, from the University of San Francisco. She also holds a master’s degree in film and television from New York University (NYU). This early introduction to filmmaking doubtlessly helped when it came to her career in movies, which kicked off (pun intended) in 2016 with her role in action fantasy sequel Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny.

2. She proudly embraces her Chinese culture

The Hong Kong-born actress once pledged, “Every time I take on a role, I will bring some Asian culture to it”. She’ll add Chinese words into dialogue when the scene commands it, and when filming Wu Assassins, she brought her own food, like dim sum and hotpot, to crew gatherings after work. She says, “It’s very family-oriented. We created our own family and bring other Western crew members into our Asian family.”

3. She’s a singer and a writer

Beyond martial arts, JuJu has a host of other talents. She released an album in Hong Kong in 2011, and wrote her own songs. She’s also published two books in Hong Kong. One, To Live a Beautiful Life, is an inspirational semi-autobiography about her experience in the reality show Rich Mate Poor Mate. It was published in 2010. Her second book, published in 2013, is a guide to Western dining called Food and Ordering at a Restaurant. She has also competed in beauty pageants – winning Miss Chinatown USA in 2009.

 4. She’s just tied the knot

In October 2019, JuJu married Antony Szeto, whom she met through a work friend. He’s a director, and their relationship was initially professional. Over the years, as they continued working together on music videos and various projects, their relationship blossomed into something romantic. They held their wedding in Los Angeles. She says of the experience, “I have always wanted to marry in a glass church under the blue sky. I really want to thank my husband. He was the one who made my dream come true today.”

5. Skills trump sex appeal

JuJu’s favourite role so far has been that of Silver Dart Shi, in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny. It was her first fiction role, and her first role that wasn’t for a short film. She loved her character’s personality in particular. She says, “Silver Dart Shi was portrayed as a masculine female character. She was certainly not sexy, contrasting her strongly against most of the other female characters in the film. For me, I loved this about her.”

JuJu says that, throughout the entertainment industry, female actors are often valued more for their appearance than for their skills. Since Silver Dart Shi was respected for her skills, it was an honour for Juju to play her.

Make sure to catch JuJu in her upcoming movie Jiu Jitsu, expected to release in July 2020.
