BAFTA 2019: The best- and worst-dressed celebrities


Happenings: The Baftas are the British answer to the Oscars, and a party in Los Angeles to celebrate the year’s nominees is a popular awards season regular. As ever, this year’s event, presented by BBC America at the Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles in Beverly Hills on January 4, featured rather a different vibe from most other awards season events, eschewing the usual champagne and canapés for a menu of tea, scones and other oh-so-British staples.

Among the many screen stars in attendance were Robert De Niro, Adam Driver, Leonardo DiCaprio, Awkwafina, Gillian Anderson, Antonio Banderas, Hong Chau, Brian Cox, Daniel Craig, Zhao Shuzhen and Taron Egerton – along with the legend he memorably portrayed in the 2019 biopic Rocketman, Sir Elton John. Among the celebrated filmmakers at the event were Pedro Almodóvar, Greta Gerwig, Bong Joon-ho, Rian Johnson, Quentin Tarantino, Taika Waititi and Lulu Wang.
