Netflix seems to be on a roll these days when it comes to showing cultural representation on screen. After recently releasing the first Indian-American series Never Have I Ever, the online streaming giant instantly succeeded it with the premiere of the coming-of-age film, The Half of It.
Written and directed by Alice Wu, the movie follows the life of a high school Chinese immigrant who finds herself in a complicated love triangle. Spoiler alert though, the film is more about the protagonist’s struggle as an immigrant and coming into her sexuality.

She was adopted from an orphanage in Shanghai
Similar to her character in the film, Leah Lewis was also born in China. The Chinese-American actress was eight months old when she was adopted from an orphanage in Shanghai. Lewis was brought to the US and raised in Gotha, Florida.
She joined The Voice when she was 18 years old
