George Floyd protests

Drake and Ryan Reynolds have dug deep and Ariana Grande hit the streets, while Floyd Mayweather is paying for George Floyd’s funeral and Kim Kardashian will foot an injured protester’s medical bills – but who got called out for a US$50 donation?

The US has been wracked by rallies against police brutality and systematic racism, with nationwide protests sparked by the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. As people took to the streets, celebrities took to their public platforms and social media to make their voices heard. There have been some stars, however, who have gone beyond speech and have taken action through monetary and physical means. Here are some of the famous people who have put their money where their mouth is.

Who is paying for what?

Kim Kardashian expressed outrage and sadness over a photo on Twitter that showed a young woman injured by rubber bullet while filming the protests in Kentucky. Kardashian offered to help with medical bills, and Twitter users tagged the woman, @shannynsharyse.

Meanwhile, boxer Floyd Mayweather has offered to pay George Floyd’s funeral expenses, and the family is said to have accepted.

K-pop is helping out too – and not just through spam

By now, most people will have heard what happened to the iWatch Dallas app launched by the Dallas Police Department in an effort to get the local community involved in stopping crime. Instead of uploading videos and photos of criminal activity as requested, K-pop fans flooded the app with “fancams” – video clips of Korean star performances – which resulted in the app being taken down.

The K-pop world has taken a more serious stance through Mark Tuan, however. While some South Korean artists such as f(x)’s Amber, Crush and Jay Park have given public support to Black Lives Matter, the Got7 rapper and singer donated US$7,000 to the Official George Floyd Memorial Fund run by Floyd’s brother, Philonise Floyd, with funds going towards the benefit, care and education of the deceased’s children.
