Zac Efron may be getting a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, but right now the vegan actor is off the grid

Zac Efron started making hearts skip beats 14 years ago when Disney's High School Musical came out. Playing the singing jock Troy Bolton, Efron warmed our TV screens and made us sing along with him and his on-screen love interest, Vanessa Hudgens.

That launched Efron into stardom, as his acting (and vocal) range led him to bag roles in movies like Hairspray, Dirty Grandpa, The Greatest Showman, Baywatch, and his last film, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile where Efron played the infamous serial killer Ted Bundy.

As the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announces that he will receive a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame in 2021, we look at how he’s changed his image from the wholesome star of days past.

Would you eat bugs for dinner if a Michelin-starred chef prepared them?

He’s vegan

But there's more to Efron than just his vocals and pretty boy looks. In an interview with Teen Vogue, he sheds light on his decision to turn vegan, “I've been experimenting with eating purely vegan. That's completely changed the way that my body works, and the way that I metabolise food, the way it turns into energy, the way that I sleep. It's been brilliant. It’s been great for my exercise, and great for my routine.”

And if you are following him on Instagram, you'd see that he’s quite the chef and likes to share his vegan recipes. Here, he makes his pre-red carpet smoothie made up of spinach, kale, blueberries, raspberries, avocado, banana, coconut water, almond milk, chia seeds and honey. Judging by the pictures of him topless, this diet is clearly working for him very, very well.

He’s off the grid on Off The Grid

It seems like a far cry from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, but Efron’s Off the Grid series is like hitting the reset button for him. He has four episodes out on YouTube, and he seems to be enjoying it. Though he did have a skiing accident; he posted on Instagram that he opted for knee surgery.

He also shared his recovery journey. In a separate playlist, he shows the exercises and how he is progressing with his therapy. Perhaps this is the reason he hasn't produced any new Off The Grid videos and instead, did another series called Gym Time with Zac Efron. One can only speculate.

We're all in this together

Except for Efron – with the star a no-show for the recent group singalong which reunited the original High School Musical cast after 12 years, to perform We're All In This Together ... via Zoom. He did participate though, as Disney showed a pre-recording of Efron introducing it – but fans inevitably lashed out at his absence. Who could blame him, though? He was in Papua New Guinea filming his new show Killing Zac Efron, where Wi-fi is apparently unstable.
