Once best-known for being half of Korea’s famous Song-Song couple with Song Hye-kyo, K-drama actor Song Joong-ki turns 35 on September 19 – here are a few things you probably didn’t know about the Descendants of the Sun and Sungkyunkwan Scandal star, who’s affectionately called ‘pretty boy’ and ‘flower boy’ for his cute looks

Popular K-drama actor Song Joong-ki, who turns 35 on September 19, has had quite a colourful career, thanks to starring roles in Korean television series such as Descendants of the Sun and Sungkyunkwan Scandal .

The celebrity, who last year divorced from wife Song Hye-kyo (and broke the hearts of millions of fans who followed the love story of “Song-Song couple”), is know as “Korea’s Leonardo DiCaprio” for his “pretty boy” looks. But there’s so much more to him – from being a top student at university to dishing out hugs to everyone (he loves his snuggles, apparently). Read on to find out more about Korea’s “flower boy”.

As a student, he was well-rounded and a role model

Song’s hardworking and competitive nature can be traced back to his years in school. He was a straight-A student, president of the student council, and even got an award for perfect attendance. He was also a skating athlete until junior high, before an injury forced him to quit.

Song scored 380 out of 400 in the national college entrance exam and finished business economics in Sungkyunkwan University. He’s certainly an achiever!

Song is known as ‘Pretty Boy Joong-ki’ or ‘Flower Boy Joong-ki’, as well as ‘Ero Joong-ki ‘ – because he loves hugging people

One reason Song’s role as Captain Yoo Si-jin or “Big Boss” was such a hit in Descendants of the Sun was because fans looked forward to him taking on the character of a tough guy after a slew of “pretty boy” roles.

An interview on Soompi reveals what he thinks of his “flower boy” image: “I have no intention of trying to get rid of my image as a ‘flower boy.’ An actor’s appearance is very important.”

He had quite an interesting mix of projects early in his career
