Hitting back, the president labelled him “unintelligent”, despite the fact that Lebron was opening a school for the disadvantaged at the time. The next day, anti-bullying and online harassment advocate Melania appeared to show she was on the basketball star’s side when her communications director, Stephanie Grisham, said: “It looks like LeBron James is working to do good things on behalf of our next generation and just as she always has, the first lady encourages everyone to have an open dialogue about issues facing children today.” “[The first lady’s] platform centres around visiting organisations, hospitals and schools, and she would be open to visiting the I Promise School in Akron,” she added. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 21, 2018 When Melania was criticised for wearing a jacket with the words “I really do not care, do you?” emblazoned on the back on her way to visit children detained at the US border, Donald Trump claimed the motif was in fact a message for the “fake news media”. However Melania had her spokesperson immediately quash any speculation: “It’s a jacket. There was no hidden message,” they announced. She nevertheless appeared to flip-flop on the issue in an ABC interview four months later, admitting, “It was kind of a message, yes.” But adding, “I would prefer that they focus on what I do and my initiatives than what I wear.” 5 facts about Claudia Conway, the teen who took on Trump’s White House Animal rights According to a book by Melania’s former aide, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, the first lady convinced the president to delay his reversal of an Obama-era ban on hunting. Trump, whose sons Donald Jr. and Eric are known for their love of big game hunting, eventually reversed the ban in June this year, but not before Melania “did some lobbying of her own, and her plea to Donald actually worked”, Wolkoff wrote. “Melania was not sympathetic to the boys’ lobbying efforts for guns and hunting or the bizarre need to hang a dead animal head on the wall,” Wolkoff added. According to Wolkoff’s book, he responded that he needn’t have got involved and “could have let the Supreme Court deal with it, but it was very important to Mike [Pence].” Want more stories like this?
