Meet Sarah McBride: the first openly transgender US state senator and LGBT rights activist

The LGBT rights activist is supported by celebrities and politicians like Amy Schumer and Joe Biden’s family, interned at the White House, and penned the memoir Tomorrow Will Be Different – but what else do we know about her?
The 30-year-old McBride made history this week when she was elected to Delaware’s state senate in a race against Republican candidate Steve Washington.
“We did it,” McBride wrote on Twitter on Tuesday (November 3) night US time, announcing her victory and thanking her supporters. “I hope tonight shows an LGBTQ kid that our democracy is big enough for them, too.”
With Donald Trump in the White House … even with anti-equality politicians and far too many state legislators, we continue to open hearts, change minds, and move equality forward. We must never forget that change trickles up
As a state senator, she will officially become America’s highest-ranking openly transgender official – and first elected official in Delaware’s history.
“I don’t intend on serving as a transgender state senator,” McBride told Delaware’s News Journal. “I intend on serving as a senator who happens to be transgender.”
So who is Sarah McBride? Here are five things you need to know about the history-making politician …

She interned at the White House
McBride did an internship at the White House in 2012, becoming the first openly transgender woman to work there in any capacity. She later spent her time working in the White House Offices of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs, where she focused on LGBTQ+ issues.
She does not like Trump (no surprises there)
