US presidential election 2020

Kim Kardashian supported Barack Obama but wavered between Trump and Hillary Clinton, Jennifer Lawrence admitted she voted for John McCain, and 50 Cent criticised Joe Biden’s tax plan on IG

The 2020 US Presidential Election has indisputably been one of the most divisive in modern history – and that goes for its celebrity onlookers, too.

As Meghan Markle and Prince Harry urged US citizens to vote – without endorsing a specific candidate, but with Markle a long-time critic of Trump – there are plenty of high-profile names who vote red. Here are some of the most unexpected celebrities to have aligned themselves with the Republican Party, then and now.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West

Both halves of social media’s most controversial couple have chequered political pasts.

Kim Kardashian voted for her first time ever in support of Barack Obama’s first term. However, by 2012 she identified as a “liberal Republican” whose prime objection to candidate Mitt Romney was his opposition to marriage equality. In 2016, Kardashian publicly wavered between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, but voted for the former with gun control and reproductive rights in mind – despite being long-term bezzies with Trump’s daughter Ivanka. She has since visited the White House to advocate for prison reform during the Trump administration.

Kanye West, meanwhile, donated to the presidential campaigns of Obama and Clinton, but courted controversy in 2018 with an aggressively pro-Trump stance. He is ran in the 2020 presidential election as an independent candidate.

Jennifer Lawrence

Lawrence made waves last month for admitting that she “grew up Republican. – my first time voting, I voted for John McCain. I was a little Republican”. The actress later tweeted that after realising she “[was voting] against my own rights, I am proud to say I am a Democrat.”
