Charli and Dixie D’Amelio, the TikTok stars you can’t take anywhere – or at least not to dinner, as an ill-fated first Dinner with the D’Amelios YouTube video shows

In many ways, influencers might as well live on a different planet than the rest of us. Their digital fame means making bank and enjoying experiences that most of us could only dream of – but netizens are also so capricious that, with one wrong step, an influencer’s career can be over in an instant.
That’s exactly what happened recently with American TikTok star Charli D’Amelio. The 16-year-old lost as many as one million followers in 24 hours after she and sister Dixie were rude during a dinner, making faces and gagging on camera in response to the dishes that were brought to the table.

But first, a little context: 19-year-old Dixie D’Amelio is also a TikTok giant in her own right, and the sisters recently created a new family YouTube channel that they run together with their parents. Among the channel’s content is the video series “Dinner with the D’Amelios” where, as the title suggests, the family enjoys a meal with a different surprise guest each episode.

The series kicked off with a video featuring make-up artist and YouTube star James Charles as the special guest. The D’Amelio family and Charles sat down for a paella dinner prepared by personal chef Aaron May, a friend of Charli and Dixie’s father Marc.

The fateful dinner got off to a bad start when May explained his menu of classic paella – which incorporates snail – to the table, calling the ingredient “an omen of good luck and fortune” at which Charli scoffed, “liar”. Dixie, on the other hand, took a small bite of the snail at the rest of the table’s urging – but then gagged and appeared to vomit, all in front of the chef. Her mum, Heidi, chastised her daughter, covering Dixie’s face with her hand and saying, “So dramatic. Excuse yourself!”

Charli then proceeded to ask May, who has been inducted as a Chef Extraordinaire in the Arizona Culinary Hall of Fame, if she could just have some dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets instead.

If all that wasn’t enough, later on in the video, Charli got onto the topic of her follower count, commenting, “Ugh, I just wish I had more time, because imagine if I hit 100 mil one year after hitting a mil?” Charles quipped, “95 million not enough for you?” To which Charli responded, “Well, I was just saying, like, even numbers,” before trailing off with a smile and a shrug.

The internet hasn’t taken kindly to the bratty behaviour. By the following day, Charli was sobbing on Instagram Live over the loss of one million followers. Dixie’s followers were apparently more forgiving, as she saw a comparatively modest exodus of 100,000, bringing her down from 43.9 million followers to 43.8 million. The older D’Amelio sister didn’t respond to the backlash with tears, but with a message on TikTok insisting that viewers should “know the full story” before criticising her and sending her hateful comments.

So much for that 100 million milestone.
