STORYLynn Farah

She became part of India’s richest family when she married Mukesh Ambani, and juggles various philanthropy, education and female empowerment projects with being a mum to Akash, Isha and Anant – so how does she do it?
Nita Ambani went from growing up in a middle class Mumbai family to becoming the matriarch at the heart of one of the richest business clans in the world. And the 57-year-old did it all following some surprisingly universal life rules – prioritising her family, spending time doing the things that she loves, and in the process carving a legacy that inspires girls and women across the globe.

No matter your circumstances, be humble

Their parents may be worth billions, but that doesn’t mean Mukesh and Nita’s children Akash, Isha and Anant had it easy growing up. Nita was determined to show her children that, despite their wealth and status, the Ambani name comes with hard work, and its legacy has to be earned. Because of this, the siblings grew up living a life that was as “normal” as possible: receiving limited pocket money, taking public transport and following curfews.
Make your wealth matter

Mukesh has an estimated net worth of US$76.5 billion. Although much of that wealth came later in life, his father Dhirubhai set the foundations with the family company, Reliance Industries, resulting in the Ambanis always living a privileged lifestyle. But Nita has said that money shouldn’t be an end goal, and people should instead focus on how they use it. She has been quoted saying that making memories is more important than anything, and those memories become your wealth.
