For months we’ve been waiting for Prince Harry and the increasingly unpopular Meghan Markle to spill the beans on their controversial split from the royal family – and now the time is finally here. Unsurprisingly, Prince Harry, 36, has said that the process of separating from royal life has been very difficult for him and his wife, 39. In a hotly anticipated interview with Oprah Winfrey , Harry invoked the memory of his late mother, Princess Diana, who had to find her way alone after she and Prince Charles divorced. “I’m just really relieved and happy to be sitting here talking to you with my wife by my side, because I can’t begin to imagine what it must have been like for her going through this process by herself all those years ago,” Harry said, adding, “because it’s been unbelievably tough for the two of us.” “But at least we have each other,” Harry continued in a clip from the interview special, which is scheduled to air on March 7 on CBS in the US, and on the following day in Britain. Diana was shown in a photo holding toddler Harry as he made the comments. Who’s the greenest British royal? Harry and Meghan sat opposite Winfrey and side-by-side, holding hands during the interview that was conducted in a lush garden setting. The couple lives in Montecito, California , where they are Winfrey’s neighbours. Markle, who recently announced she is pregnant with the couple’s second child, wore an embroidered, empire-style black dress. Harry wore a light grey suit and white dress shirt, minus a tie. The brief promotional clip was one of two of that aired Sunday, February 28, during CBS’ news magazine 60 Minutes . Winfrey’s questions and comments were predominant, including her statement “you said some pretty shocking things here”, without an indication of what she was referring to. Markle was not heard from in the clips. Harry and Markle’s shock announcement in January 2020 that they were stepping back from royal duties rocked Britain’s royal family, with British newspapers dubbing it “Megxit”. The couple stepped away from full-time royal life in March 2020, unhappy at media scrutiny and the strictures of their roles. They cited what they described as the intrusions and racist attitudes of the British media toward the duchess , who is African American. It was agreed the situation would be reviewed after a year. On February 19, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the couple will not be returning to royal duties and Harry will give up his honorary military titles – a decision that makes the couple’s split from the royal family formal and final The pair, also known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, verified that “they will not be returning as working members of the Royal Family”. A spokesperson for the couple hit back at suggestions that Harry and Markle were not devoted to duty. The world’s richest royals, ranked “As evidenced by their work over the past year, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain committed to their duty and service to the UK and around the world, and have offered their continued support to the organisations they have represented regardless of official role,” the spokesperson said in a statement. Winfrey is not the only talk show host who got to speak to the former royals; Harry also granted a chat with The Late Late Show host James Corden. “We all know what the British press can be like, and it was destroying my mental health,” Harry told Corden. “I was, like, this is toxic. So I did what any husband and what any father would do. I need to get my family out of here.” Harry continued, “It was never walking away. It was stepping back rather than stepping down. It was a really difficult environment.” Harry has long had a difficult relationship with Britain’s tabloids, blaming press intrusion for contributing to his mother Princess Diana’s death in a car crash in 1997. Earlier this month, Markle won a high-profile privacy claim against Associated Newspapers for publishing a private letter that she wrote to her estranged father. Harry said he was “more comfortable” with the portrayal of the royal family in the hit Netflix series The Crown than he is with newspaper stories written about him and his family. It’s fictional,” Harry said of the show. “It’s loosely based on the truth. Of course, it’s not strictly accurate, but it gives you a rough idea about what that lifestyle, what the pressures of putting duty and service above family and everything else, what can come from that.” Queen Elizabeth’s favourite TV shows, from Downton Abbey to Doctor Who Harry, who remains sixth in line to the throne, revealed that he would like to see actor Damian Lewis play him in future series. The prince also admitted during the relaxed chat that it was the first time he had ever been on an open-top bus. Harry went on to describe evenings at their Santa Barbara home. “Depending on how the day’s been and how busy it’s been, we do Archie’s tea, give him a bath, read him a book, put him down, go downstairs. “Meg might cook a meal, might order a takeaway, go upstairs to sit in bed, turn the TV on, watch some Jeopardy , maybe watch a little bit of Netflix,” the prince said.
