  • After being appointed adviser to her president Donald Trump, Ivanka broke White House ethics rules by openly promoting Goya Foods on Instagram
  • She made cringey comments about homeless people and once stormed out of an interview after defending her father’s cursory efforts to help working mums

From her early days as a New York socialite (who often made some notably questionable fashion choices) to her high-profile spell in the White House, controversy has frequently followed Ivanka Trump. Whether misunderstood or meaning to spite, when the former president’s daughter opens her mouth or goes on the record, her comments have often had a habit of rubbing people up the wrong way.
The press seems to think it’s ironic that I, born of great privilege, think people want to work for what they are given – as if being Donald Trump’s daughter isn’t the hardest job in the world

After scoring a coveted role in her father Donald Trump’s White House as an adviser, Ivanka was expected to follow federal ethics laws preventing the promotion of brands. However after the CEO of Goya Foods expressed his support for her father, Ivanka controversially went into ad mode and openly pushed their products.

Amid a call to boycott the brand, Ivanka tweeted alongside an image of herself holding a can of black beans: “If it’s Goya, it has to be good.” The move got people talking even more, saying she was abusing her position of influence. She should’ve known better having previously been scolded for promoting her jewellery brand which she eventually gave up due to conflict with her new government job.

Ivanka’s career advice

Trump had some unwanted advice for unemployed Americans in July 2020. The businesswoman pushed a “Find Something New” campaign, telling her fellow citizens, “There has never been a more critical time for Americans of all ages and backgrounds to be aware of the multiple pathways to career success and gain the vocational training and skills they need to fill jobs in a changing economy.”

She was criticised for preaching that “jobs are changing” despite being in a very privileged position herself.
