Bollywood rich kids: the children of Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan are the true Crazy Rich Asians – 5 Indian Gen Z celebrities splashing their lavish lives on Instagram

On a talk show, Shweta Bachchan, eldest daughter of India’s “Mr Sexy Baritone” Amitabh Bachchan, noted that she enjoys the best of two worlds: the perks of peripheral fame courtesy of being part of the most famous film family in India, and yet, the privacy and normalcy of being a non-actor, left unbothered by selfie chasers.
With social media amplifying the otherwise private lives of stars’ kids, Bollywood’s Gen Z offspring are living their best life on Instagram or TikTok. Fresh out of high school and pre-graduation or career, their posts are often envy-inducing montages of private jet holidays (OK, not so many in the last year), luxury yachts and designer shopping sprees charged to black Amexs co-signed by celebrities. Here’s a look at Bollywood’s privileged next generation.

Suhana Khan

When Suhana, the only daughter of Shah Rukh Khan, the “King of Bollywood”, made the cover of Vogue India in August 2018 – still a student and with no films to her name – there was much discussion among Mumbaikers. Seemingly she made the cover purely on her genes: with an interior designer mum Gauri Khan and Bollywood supremo dad, she didn’t need any more credentials.

Now aged 20, a recent post on Instagram was picked up by the Hindustan Times and other outlets, showing her grating cheese while improbably glammed up at her home in New York. Seems there’s nothing that’s not news when it comes to Suhana.

Now studying at New York University, she’s far from the madding Mumbai crowd in a luxurious private apartment in a gated community. Follow her Instagram to see private yacht parties, a circle of ultra-glam friends and a duplex facing Central Park. Perhaps even shots of her performing other basic skills in the kitchen!

Aarav Bhatia

The blue-eyed boy of Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna – grandson of Indian legend Rajesh Khanna and Tenet star Dimple Kapadia – Aarav Bhatia is 18, but has been in the press since the day he was born. Despite belonging to a lineage of actors, he has no plans to kick-start a career as an action-star like his father. So far.

His interest lies in cooking, with plans to be a master chef, but the young lad already has a following on social media waiting to see what he makes of his life. Much like his mate Ibrahim Ali Khan …

Ibrahim Ali Khan

Aarav’s celebrity squad includes Ibrahim Ali Khan – mirroring the friendship between their famous fathers Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan, both of whom have been major Bollywood stars since the early 90s.

Just turned 20, Khan has already modelled for Indian couturiers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, been featured on innumerable magazine covers and has an enviable designer wardrobe – a hybrid of East and West.

After posts with captions like Wiz Khalifa’s line “Popping champagne ‘cause we made it, back in the Phantom we faded” made ripples online, his father reportedly asked him to stop oversharing on social media. Heeding royal protocol (his father is the Nawab of Pataudi after all, making Ibrahim the heir apparent), his official account has suddenly gone private. Now to see what the young gun is up to, fans are turning to his famous sister, actress Sara Ali Khan, who sometimes includes her brother in holiday snaps from luxurious private villas.

Navya Naveli Nanda

As Amitabh Bachchan’s first grandchild, the daughter of author and designer Shweta Bachchan-Nanda, it seemed almost inevitable that the pretty Gen Z would have a cakewalk into couture or any other form of stardom. But no.

She gave a thumbs down to several silver-platter offers and instead plans to head a company like her media-shy father, businessman Nikhil Nanda. Beautiful, like her aunt Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan, she’s been seen in shimmering costumes at billionaire bashes hosted by the Ambanis as well as partying in bikinis off the Greek islands with people of her ilk … people such as Aryan Khan.

Aryan Khan

Very little is known about the perpetually scowling Aryan Khan, 23, the eldest born to Shah Rukh Khan. More rumours circulate about him than facts. When he posted a simple shot of himself with his friends, the observant noted the art work behind him was an M.F. Hussain original, quite different to the US$10 posters of sport or pop stars that most university students have on their walls. The artist’s Sprinkling Horses sold at Christie’s in New York in 2011 for US$1.14 million, so this Khan is clearly no ordinary student.
