A group in China recently started selling statues of Donald Trump as Buddha on Taobao, playing on his campaign slogan and telling business owners, “make your company great again”. Clearly, even though some have distanced themselves from the former US president as if he were a bad omen, in the eyes of others he still has plenty of meme potential. Some might argue that Trump exhibited an eccentric stance towards the rest of the world while in office, evidenced by the presents he gave other world leaders . It’s hardly surprising then that there’s a rich crop of outlandish models of him across the globe. Here are five of the most memorable … Are these Ivanka Trump’s 5 most tone-deaf comments? The Emperor Has No Balls In 2016, naked statues of Trump popped up in public places in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Cleveland and New York. The artworks were from activist collective Indecline and titled The Emperor Has No Balls . The spectacles didn’t last long however as the group admits they exhibit most of their works around the US illegally. Two years later, the anonymous group also created a sculpture that depicted Trump locked up inside a prison cell, placing it inside a Trump hotel suite. Dump Trump In June 2019, a statue of Trump sitting on a gold toilet and tweeting appeared in London’s Trafalgar Square. The 5-metre-tall structure was erected in protest of a scheduled state visit from the then-president and was nicknamed “Dump Trump”. The statue emitted noises of flatulence and featured audio of infamous Trump catchphrases including, “you are fake news”, “no collusion”, “I’m a very stable genius” and “witch-hunt”. The piece was created by American writer and dinosaur expert Don Lessem who used US$25,000 of his own money for the project. “I’m interested in things that are big, not very intelligent and have lost their place in history”, he told The Independent . Will he get cut? 11 films that feature the Donald – for now Statue of Illiberty In 2019, Tomaž Schlegl exhibited a wooden statue of Trump in his wife Melania’s country of birth, Slovenia. The artwork was a reminder of Trump’s love/hate relationship with the public. It showed the then-POTUS with his arm raised in the style of the Statue of Liberty and featured two faces – one “nice” and the other the image of a “vampire”. The sculpture didn’t go down well however as in 2020, it was burned down. It wasn’t the architect/artist’s first Trump statue, as he was also behind a 2019 wooden structure of Melania depicted at the 2017 inauguration . That too was destroyed by fire. Before he gave his first post-presidency speech, the figure depicting him all-business on top (wearing a shirt, suit jacket and tie) and casual on the bottom (USA flag shorts with flip flops) was wheeled into the corridor of the conference and drew plenty of attention from fans of the Don. Critics referred to it as the “golden calf” in a nod to Trump practically being worshipped by some of his fans. California-based Tommy Zegan created the piece out of fibreglass but he also offers them in bronze and stainless steel. He hopes to display one permanently in Trump’s planned presidential library.
