Meghan Markle’s best and worst fashion looks: the Duchess of Sussex wowed with Givenchy and Prada outfits worn as a working British royal with Queen Elizabeth and Prince Harry, but had epic style misses too
But the Suits actress also showcased her personal style, often by breaking royal protocols and sporting new, youthful brands like Strathberry and Sentaler, leaving a powerful mark in the royal fashion books.
Here are some of Meghan’s best – and most lacking – fashion moments over the years.
The hits
When showing up at the Mountbatten Festival of Music in 2020, at London’s Royal Albert Hall, Meghan opted for a head-to-toe red ensemble that matched Harry’s outfit. Her red Kalika stretch-crêpe gown from emerging British brand Safiyaa is priced at US$1,800. She paired it with a Manolo Blahnik red satin Capri clutch in the same hue.
The queen, on the other hand, was dressed in her usual bold shades: this time, a lime green coat by Stewart Parvin – the same colour she wore to Harry and Meghan’s wedding.
For her engagement announcement to Prince Harry, Meghan opted for a white coat by Canadian brand Line the Label, coupled with shoes by her go-to brand Aquazzura, featuring laces around her ankles. Despite being restocked, the coat quickly sold out after the couple’s appearance.
Appearing with Queen Elizabeth and Prince Harry during the queen’s Young Leaders Awards Ceremony, Meghan looked elegant in a pale pink dress by Prada, featuring a short-sleeved, double-breasted top with a boat neck and an asymmetrical skirt, cinched by a skinny belt. She finished off the ensemble with a pair of black suede Aquazzura pumps and a Prada clutch.
The then duchess-to-be was outfitted in beige Sentaler coat, a hat by Irish milliner Philip Treacy and Stuart Weitzman boots for the St. Mary Magdalene church service on Christmas morning in 2017.
Meghan’s wedding dress by Waight Keller was show-stopping, and provided a great style reference for all brides.
For the couple’s very first tour as married royals, Meghan offered a handy how-to fashion guide for working professionals with her forest green Givenchy ensemble and nude pumps.
On Christmas Day in 2018, Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Harry and Meghan gathered for a service at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham, Norfolk. Meghan sported a navy coat and bag by Victoria Beckham, plus a fascinator. The outfit contrasted with Kate’s ruby red look.
The couple attended their final public event as royals at Westminster Abbey in March 2020, before returning to Canada. Markle was gracefully outfitted in a head-to-toe emerald green ensemble, which many called her “revenge dress”. The Emilia Wickstead garment was paired with a matching netted hat by William Chambers and a mini bag by Gabriela Hearst.
At her first garden party at Buckingham Palace, newlywed Meghan went full English in a custom-made cream chiffon dress with a silk-chiffon upper bodice by London designer Goat, another hat by Philip Treacy and shoes by Tamara Mellon.
The misses
Before Meghan became a British royal, she was a working actress in Hollywood, where she played a number of racy early roles at odds with her dignified image today. During one of her first public appearances in 2007, she attended an ABS Allen Schwartz event in a black and white strapless dress with a bow. Let’s just say we’re relieved she developed a better sartorial sense since her early career days.
This outfit is a far cry from her Duchess of Sussex wardrobe. In 2012, Meghan showed up at an event in a burgundy draped dress. While she looked radiant, the dress just wasn’t impressive enough to stand out – and bears an unfortunate resemblance to a cinched curtain.
Although the Sussexes scored a diplomatic success with their South African tour, Meghan’s fashion choices were a little patchier. While we liked this blue shirt dress by Veronica Beard, which Meghan previously wore during a trip to Tonga, we preferred the light blue pumps she chose for her earlier trip. Those shoes better matched the colour palette and evoked a contemporary chicness, compared to this pair of black wedge sandals.
We applaud the message Markle sent by wearing this US$85 monochrome dress by Mayamiko, an environmentally friendly fashion label from Malawi. Aesthetically though, the piece did not demonstrate the best styling aptitude.
For her solo appearance in Woodstock, Cape Town, Meghan chose a sleeveless black jumpsuit by Everlane. The gold earrings offered a nice finish, but the silhouette and length of the outfit did not flatter her.
On the final day of her South Africa tour, Meghan chose a double-breasted khaki trench dress by Banana Republic finished with Stuart Weitzman Legend heels. While the dress must have been wallet friendly, it unfortunately did not leave a sartorial bang.
