In Chinese tradition, weddings are not just about the legal union of two lovers or even the celebration of their love with families and friends, but a chance to show off social status and wealth. And for celebrity couples – like Angelababy and Huang Xiaoming, Yang Mi and Lau Hoi-wai, Liu Shishi and Nicky Wu Qilong, and Hu Jing who married Malaysian billionaire Frank Choo – a wedding can take extravagance to the next level. In the following cases, these celebrity nuptials often featured A-list guests, designer wedding gowns, diamond jewellery – and eight-figure bills. Here’s how they said “I do”.

Ever since the two started dating, model and actress Angelababy and Huang Xiaoming’s romance has attracted enormous public attention. The media have lavished scrutiny on every detail of their love story – especially the lavish gifts Huang has bestowed on his spouse.

The October 2015 wedding was considered the culmination of their luxurious lifestyle, taking place at Shanghai Exhibition Centre, and reportedly costing the couple 200 million yuan (around US$31 million) including more than 35 million yuan (about US$5.4 million) for decoration alone. Angelababy wore a US$1.6 million Chaumet wedding band and a custom-designed Dior gown. The couple also prepared lavish gifts for their guests as a token of their appreciation.

They subsequently set up home in a mock Disney castle in Qingdao that they bought even before getting married. Recently some segments of Chinese media have been reporting rumours the couple have now divorced, but whatever the truth, theirs remains a wedding to remember.

Getting married at the height of their careers in 2014, singer and now influencer Yang Mi and Hong Kong actor/singer Hawick Lau Hoi-wai (known as Liu Kaiwei in China) generated plenty of hype. Although they chose to celebrate with a simple reception away from the public eye in Bali, Indonesia, their wedding still cost around US$2 million. The now divorced couple booked the luxurious Bulgari Resort Bali, which was decorated with thousands of white roses, for their big day, attended only by close friends and immediate family.

Choosing Bali’s Ayana Resort and Spa as their wedding venue, singer and actor Nicky Wu Qilong and actress Liu Shishi are said to have spent US$3.2 million on their January 2015 nuptials, according to The Straits Times. The gathering welcomed 350 guests to witness their special moment, while Liu’s wedding gown was especially designed for her by Carven from Paris.
