Ever since Crazy Rich Asians became a big-screen success story, fans have been clamouring for a sequel to the historic all-Asian Hollywood romcom. The film adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novel not only grossed US$238 million at the box office but also played an important role in inspiring more on- screen diversity in the US.
Director Jon M. Chu and several cast members confirmed plans for a second and third movie in multiple interviews. However, the production side has seemingly struggled to get the ball rolling, with Malaysian-American co-writer Adele Lim walking away due to a huge pay disparity between her and a white male counterpart.

While we continue to wait for updates on Crazy Rich Asians 2, let’s take a look at the other exciting projects keeping the cast busy.

The world instantly fell in love with Henry Golding when he played the dashing Singaporean scion Nick Young. Since then, the Malaysian-British actor has become a household name – recently cast alongside Dakota Johnson in Netflix’s modern adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion. Golding will also portray the title role in the action-adventure film Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins. The origin story of the sword-swinging character is slated for release in July 2021.

A year and a half after her beloved comedy series Fresh Off the Boat went off the air, Constance Wu is ready to make her return to the small screen. She has signed on to star opposite Chris Pratt in the Amazon Prime thriller The Terminal List as a war correspondent – a far cry from her role as the bubbly Rachel Chu. Wu is also part of the forthcoming Amazon anthology series Solos.

Gemma Chan returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Gemma Chan’s 2021 is looking as bright as Astrid Leong-Teo’s opulent jewellery collection. Chan is poised to stand out as immortal being Sersi in Eternals, a Marvel Studios movie directed by newly-minted Oscar winner Chloé Zhao. Having portrayed Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel, Chan is one of a few actors to play multiple characters in the MCU. She will also appear in the psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling, which should arrive in theatres later this year.

Sonoya Mizuno joins Game of Thrones prequel cast

Who could ever forget Araminta Lee’s breathtaking moment in Crazy Rich Asians? Sonoya Mizuno did a wonderful job as the effervescent bride-to-be, especially when she walked down the water-filled aisle in style. Mizuno is set to wow audiences once again in 2022, portraying Mysaria in HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon. The Japanese-Argentinian-English actress is also working on a drama film called Am I OK?

Golden Globe-winner and Gucci ambassador Awkwafina has a slew of projects underway. Everyone loved her as Rachel Chu’s comical bestie Goh Peik Lin, but now she’s truly spreading her wings. She will appear in Disney’s remake of The Little Mermaid and join forces with Sandra Oh in a Netflix comedy. Not only that, she will play a vital role in the Marvel movie Shang- Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Crazy Rich Asians’ very own Michelle Yeoh and Ronny Chieng are also part of the highly-anticipated superhero film coming in September 2021.

Harry Shum Jr. and Jimmy O. Yang team up in a romcom

Harry Shum Jr. and Jimmy O. Yang will be making an on-screen reunion for the upcoming Netflix romantic comedy Love Hard. Their roles Charlie Wu and Bernard Tai had limited interactions in Crazy Rich Asians, so hopefully they will have more in this Nina Dobrev-headlined film. Love Hard will centre on a young woman who falls for a guy she meets on a dating app only to find out that she has been catfished.
