Fame and celebrity

  • Friends: The Reunion star Jennifer Aniston’s mum cashed in on her daughter’s fame in 1999 with a well-timed memoir; not unlike Beyoncé’s father, Mathew Knowles
  • Modern Family’s Ariel Winter almost lost her job on the show thanks to her mum’s ‘harassment’, and Adele cut her father off after he blabbed to the tabloids

When it comes to fame and family, things can get tricky. Plenty of celebs have cut off their loved ones for betraying them. Some stars were left furious after their families sold stories and photos to the tabloids, while others have found out that working with your parents can be a really bad idea.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Mark Evans, Adele’s dad, had died after a long battle with bowel cancer. The pair were not on speaking terms in his final years.

Adele and her father’s troubled relationship started when he walked out when she was three, leaving her mother to raise her alone.

He revealed in an interview with a UK tabloid: “I was putting away two litres of vodka and seven or eight pints of Stella [beer] every day. God only knows how I survived it.”

He added: “The kindest thing I could do for Adele was to make sure she never saw me in that state.”

Then, many years later in 2011, he and his famous daughter fell out when Evans sold an interview to a newspaper and suggested during the interview that Adele struggled to find love because of her abandonment issues.

Famously private Adele was left fuming, and told US Vogue in 2012: “If I ever see him, I will spit in his face.

“I was actually ready to start trying to have a relationship with him. He’s blown it. He will never hear from me again.”
