Stars who cut off their parents: why Meghan Markle, Adele, Jennifer Aniston and 3 more celebrities disowned their fathers and mothers
When it comes to fame and family, things can get tricky. Plenty of celebs have cut off their loved ones for betraying them. Some stars were left furious after their families sold stories and photos to the tabloids, while others have found out that working with your parents can be a really bad idea.
Janet Jackson has a net worth of US$190 million in 2021, so how does the iconic star make and splash her cash?
Adele
Earlier this month, it was reported that Mark Evans, Adele’s dad, had died after a long battle with bowel cancer. The pair were not on speaking terms in his final years.
Adele and her father’s troubled relationship started when he walked out when she was three, leaving her mother to raise her alone.

He revealed in an interview with a UK tabloid: “I was putting away two litres of vodka and seven or eight pints of Stella [beer] every day. God only knows how I survived it.”
He added: “The kindest thing I could do for Adele was to make sure she never saw me in that state.”
Famously private Adele was left fuming, and told US Vogue in 2012: “If I ever see him, I will spit in his face.
“I was actually ready to start trying to have a relationship with him. He’s blown it. He will never hear from me again.”

And he probably didn’t – in 2019, it was revealed that Evans was living in a small rented home on a housing estate in South Wales earning between US$70 and US$150 a day as a delivery driver.
Beyoncé
Beyoncé’s father, Mathew Knowles, was heavily involved in his daughter’s career from the get-go. Her beginnings in the group Destiny’s Child saw Mathew pull rank and take in huge payments for managing the popular girl group, which caused tension.
Neither Beyoncé nor sister Solange were present at his wedding to Gena Avery in 2013.

Meghan Markle
Perhaps still the most famous and dramatic case of a celeb cutting off a family member, the world watched in disbelief as the Meghan and Thomas Markle drama unfolded in HD real time.
How does Ellen DeGeneres spend her US$370 million net worth?
After a dramatic will-he-won’t-he, a mystery heart surgery and a very personal letter from his daughter, Thomas was eventually a no-show at the royal wedding, leaving Prince Charles to walk Meghan down the aisle.
Thomas has continued to sell press interviews and has repeatedly reached out to Meghan publicly, but to no avail. Meghan has not seen her father or introduced him to son Archie, even though they only live 400km (240 miles) apart.

Selena Gomez
Both mother and daughter served as executive producers on Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, and issues were said to have arisen behind the scenes on that too. The duo walked the red carpet together for the series, but the peace did not last long. In December 2017, they unfollowed each other on Instagram. Ouch.

Ariel Winter
There was nothing modern about Modern Family star Ariel Winter’s family drama.
Back in October 2012, the then-14-year-old actress filed for a restraining order against mum Crystal Workman, accusing her of physical and verbal abuse. Ariel’s older sister, Shanelle Gray, was granted temporary guardianship.
During the highly publicised court battle, it was alleged by Gray’s lawyer that Ariel was repeatedly on the verge of getting fired from Modern Family “because of the mother’s harassment and interference”.
In 2016, Ariel told Ellen DeGeneres that neither her nor sister Shanelle have a relationship with their mother Crystal.

Jennifer Aniston
Growing up, Jennifer Aniston and her mother Nancy had a tumultuous relationship, which reportedly only became worse as the years went by.
Back in her day, Nancy Dow was herself an actress, starring in TV shows including The Beverly Hillbillies and The Wild Wild West.
“She was very critical of me. Because she was a model, she was gorgeous, stunning. I wasn’t,” Aniston told The Hollywood Reporter.
Aniston eventually became estranged from her mother when Nancy wrote a book in 1999 about their relationship called From Mother and Daughter to Friends: A Memoir to cash in on Jen’s fame.

Aniston was left so angry, the two apparently didn’t speak for over a decade, but eventually reconnected before Nancy died in 2016 at the age of 79.
Fortunately, Jen no longer holds a grudge. “She did it because that was what she grew up with,” Aniston told The Hollywood Reporter, reflecting on the feud and her mother’s actions.
