If we were to pick one local rising star to stan unreservedly right now, it would have to be Keung To (and incidentally, all these Hong Kong celebs would agree). Scoring hit songs, gracing billboards and attracting legions of feverish fans, the 22-year-old has quickly become one of the most successful Canto-pop singers in recent years.

But it wasn’t always this way. Can you believe that the Mirror boy band star went through difficult times growing up? From kindergarten to high school, Keung was teased and ridiculed due to his appearance. So what happened, and how did he transform himself into the celebrity he is today? STYLE takes a look back at his teenage life.

Rise to fame

At age 18, Keung took part in China’s Super Boy TV singing contest. Unfortunately, he only made it to the final 30. A year later, in 2018, he decided to give it another shot and signed up for the local ViuTV’s Good Night Show. Who knew that it would serve as a life-changing opportunity to share his motivating story with 7 million Hongkongers?

Tough times

Rewind three years though and at age 15, Keung was fat-shamed and criticised for his 90kg (200 pound) body weight. In several interviews with local media outlets, Keung revealed that he was bullied by his classmates because no one wanted to be friends with him, describing his high school days as very lonely and unpleasant. Keung was even warned by doctors about his weight, who highlighted the growing risk of heart disease, high blood pressure or diabetes if the situation continued.

Shedding the weight

But it’s clear from his current looks that Keung went through an intense weight loss journey. So how did he do it? The hard way: he ran every day and ate minimal meals. In another interview with ViuTV, he shared that he even signed up for some fitness and training courses to find the right way to lose weight without harming his health.

Even though he managed to shed some 27kg (60 pounds), Keung lost confidence in himself, and has opened up on screen about his long-lasting trauma in a shaking tone. Despite this loss of self-esteem, he still insisted on showcasing his talents such as singing, dancing and performing, instead of burying them.

As a teen, Keung would put on random fashion pieces – cardigans, earrings, white shirts, big hats and trousers, all matched with his famous thick black haircut. Footage from his past shows that Keung was very into black and white; some may think that the colours he wore reflected his personality and mood at the time.

He is finally happy in his own skin

Keung, now 22, is turning into a style and Canto-pop icon. Just a few years ago, he was still struggling with his self-identity and living under the stereotype of a fat kid. Today, Keung can pull off a charming blazer, coat or tracksuit – with plenty of colours. It’s important to remember he is not the only one to experience such a dramatic transformation – and it takes a lot of courage to overcome the challenges he faced.

Here’s to a bright future

Whether you’re a fan of Keung To or not, we all have to acknowledge his huge success within the past three years. He has been through a lot and grown up through scrutiny and self-doubt. Now finally gaining the admiration of Hongkongers, it’s clear that his hard work paid off – not only in banking millions from advertisements and albums, but also resulting in a better self, mentally and physically. Keung’s example shows us that when it comes to conquering your goals, nothing is impossible, as long as you give it a try.
