If you’ve been eagerly anticipating K-drama queen Son Ye-jin’s on-screen comeback, then breath a sigh of relief – the wait is finally over.

The Korean star of hit TV shows and films like Something in the Rain, Personal Taste and, of course, Crash Landing on You, Son recently revealed that she plans to join the upcoming drama Thirty-Nine. The 12-episode romance drama series will revolve around three friends about to turn 40. Shooting is expected to start in August, according to Woman Chosun.

So what do we know about the series – and Son’s role in it – so far?

Son might be best known as Yoon Se-ri, a chaebol heiress in Crash Landing on You – the career- and life-defining role led to her IRL romance with co-star Hyun Bin, too.

But Son has acted in many other roles, including a florist in Summer Scent, a prosecutor in Don’t Look Back: The Legend of Orpheus, and a manager at a coffee shop chain in Something in the Rain.

Now, Son makes her first foray into medicine in Thirty-Nine, playing the wealthy head dermatologist at a posh clinic to the rich and famous in Gangnam.

Thirty-Nine will be Son’s first JTBC drama after a three-year break from the network. (Crash Landing on You was broadcasted by TVN.) This is significant because Son also chose JTBC over major South Korean TV networks SBS, KBS and MBC when she returned to the screen after a five-year break in 2018 with Something in the Rain.

Considering that Son’s first JTBC project was such a hit, plenty of K-drama fans are looking forward to what her second go with the network will be like.

Thirty-Nine seems poised for success – and not just because Son is its leading lady. The K-drama’s screenwriter and director are definitely of note too.

Screenwriter Yoo Young-a already has an amazing filmography of touching films from Kim Ji-Young: Born 1982 to On Your Wedding Day to Miracle in Cell No 7. Aside from films, she showed her K-drama writing chops with Encounter, which starred Song Hye-Kyo and Park Bo-gum in 2018.

The director, Kim Sang-ho, is also well known for his past milestones, and recently directed Run On, which starred Im Si-wan and Shin Se-kyung.

Fans of Netflix’s Hospital Playlist will be happy to know that Jeon Mi-do, who plays Chae Song-hwa, decided to take the lead role of acting coach Jung Chan-young in Thirty-Nine. News about the offer emerged earlier this March. Many K-drama fans are looking forward to seeing what the chemistry will be like between Son and Jeon, considering that the show is about a group of female friends.

According to MyDramaList, many other stars have either joined, or are considering joining, the drama, including Kim Ji-hyun, Ahn So-hee, Yeon Woo-jin and Lee Moo-saeng.
