But what exactly is going on? And why is Charlene in South Africa while her family remains in Monaco? From complications after surgery to new love-child claims, here’s everything you need to know about the royal love saga.

The mystery medical procedures

After Prince Albert made numerous public appearances by himself at the start of 2020, the princess released a statement saying she would not be with her husband on their tenth wedding anniversary.

She blamed their separation on instructions from her medical team. In her message, Charlene thanked Albert for being “the most incredible support to me”. She also said she was undergoing “multiple, complicated procedures after contracting a severe ear, nose and throat infection in May”.

Despite the separation, the princess said she had daily conversations with her husband and children to “keep [her] spirits up”.
