Most Bollywood fans know Gauri Khan as the doting wife of superstar Shah Rukh Khan. She once said in an interview that her husband’s success “was very organic and gradual”, adding: “We went through ups and downs. But he has accomplished so much and [has] done so well for himself.”

While she has always stood firm by her husband for 30 years and counting, preferring to largely stay away from the limelight herself, Gauri is not short of impressive achievements. The mother of three has paved her way as a top interior designer in the last decade and turned into a lucrative film producer, amassing a reported net worth of US$215 million. So how did she make her own fortune and achieve such quiet success?

Not many got their big break at home, but Gauri is an exception. “I was redecorating my own home, and other related projects, when people started approaching me to design their properties as well,” she told Design Essentia Magazine.

With her background in design and passion for art and painting, Gauri took the plunge and refurbished her super-expensive Mannat mansion. The US$27 million residence took 10 years to build and features life-size Hindu statues, crystal chandeliers and plenty of amenities for the family, such as a gym, library, boxing ring, tennis court and auditorium, according to Vogue India.
From the Ambanis to Bollywood stars
Since she started her design gig in 2013, Gauri has worked with a number of big-league Bollywood celebrities and business moguls. She helped Nita Ambani in designing her Antilia’s lounge area and was responsible for giving Reliance’s Jio World Centre its 3D photorealistic nuance.
