  • Before playing New York private school student Luna La on HBO Max’s Gossip Girl, Zión Moreno appeared on Mexican Netflix series Control Z
  • Isaiah Stannard played a trans teen with a supportive mum in NBC’s Good Girls, while Mj Jackson was the first trans person to be nominated for an Emmy for Pose

It’s no secret that the transgender community continues to fight for equality across the world every single day. And among those on the front lines transforming representation in the media are transgender actors themselves.

Recently, 13 Reasons Why star Tommy Dorfman reintroduced herself to the world as a trans woman, inspiring many and sparking significant discourse in the process.

However, she is not the only one making her mark on the entertainment industry. Transgender celebrities such as Emmy-nominated Mj Rodriguez and Nicole Maines are also carving their names in history.

Best known for playing preppy high schooler Ryan Shaver in the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, Dorfman recently revealed on her Instagram and in Time magazine that she has been “privately identifying and living as a woman”. Dorfman shared that she has undergone a medical transition and described it as a “beautiful” process.

The social media star also clarified in the interview that she will no longer take on any male roles and will instead “infuse [her] trans body into film and television”.

Often stealing the spotlight in HBO Max’s Gossip Girl reboot is model-turned-actress Zión Moreno, who plays New York private school student Luna La. Born in Texas to Mexican parents, she talked to Looper about the series’ LGBTQ+ representation saying, “I think that it’s going to be really rewarding to be able to make an impact on little queer kids’ lives, on little Latino kids’ lives.” Before being cast in the diverse TV show, Moreno previously starred in the Mexican Netflix series Control Z.
