Meet Jessica Springsteen, equestrian silver medallist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Gucci ambassador and daughter of rock icon Bruce Springsteen
It wasn’t just her first medal, but her first Olympics, after she was named an alternate for the 2012 London Olympics. And luck seemed to be on the 29-year-old’s side when she rode atop Don Juan van de Donkhoeve, her 12-year-old stallion, in Tokyo.
Springsteen is currently ranked 22nd in the world in the sport of showjumping. But other than her impressive showmanship, what is her famous family like, how did she get her start, and what are her interests outside of equestrian sports?
She grew up riding horses
Springsteen started riding horses from the age of four and got her first pony at six. She spent time at Stone Hill Farm, the Springsteens’ 121-hectare (300-acre) estate in Colts Neck, New Jersey, according to CNN. She was inspired by her mum, Patti, who always wanted to ride horses. “She was like my first riding idol,” Springsteen has been widely quoted as saying.
Springsteen trained at a centre for young riders, Beacon Hill Show Stables, near the Springsteens’ farm. She called it “one of the best for junior riders in the country”, according to CNN.
The famous family
The Springsteen name needs no introduction. Jessica’s dad, Bruce, is a celebrated rock star, with an estimated net worth of US$500 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth, and annual earnings to the tune of US$80 million a year.
Bruce has penned numerous rock radio staples, such as Born to Run and Dancing in the Dark, and sold more than 135 million albums globally. In 2016, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama.
Patti is also a well-known musician. She and Bruce are the only Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees to have an Olympian daughter, according to Vanity Fair.
She’s an equestrian brand ambassador for Gucci
Gucci embraced the Year of the Horse in 2014. They chose Springsteen as an equestrian brand ambassador, and the Italian luxury brand’s former creative director, Frida Giannini, designed a riding collection exclusively for her. According to Vogue Australia, the collection featured a Gucci archival crest emblazoned on rugs, saddle pads, blazers and personalised shirts with Springsteen’s initials.
She’s dating a fellow horse rider
Springsteen has shared snippets of her relationship with fellow rider Lorenzo De Luca on Instagram.
Like Springsteen, De Luca also excels in the equestrian sport. According to EssentiallySports, he is the only Italian jumper to compete in the Rolex IJRC Top 10. He also won the Rolex Rome Grand Prix in 2018 and ranked seventh at the World Equestrian Games.
She graduated from Duke University
Springsteen studied psychology at North Carolina’s Duke University. If she wasn’t riding horses, she would have pursued a career related to her degree, according to Upscale Living. “I loved working with kids and learning the way the human mind works,” she said. No wonder she solved puzzles to pass the time during quarantine last year.
