The world of celebrity romance is certainly a tumultuous one. While many Bollywood couples have stood the test of time, others have clearly had a remarkably short shelf life.

There are former flames who chose to remain friends, even appearing on screen together post-break-up, while others ended on more salty terms. From cheating scandals and heated exchanges, to even refusing to work together after a messy split, here are the five of the biggest Bollywood celebrity break-ups.

It’s impossible not to include Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai’s break-up on this list. The once golden couple started dating after they worked in the classic Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam in 1999 but ended their relationship in 2002. What followed after were heated accusations between the former couple. Rai told The Times of India that Khan had physically abused her. She also told the newspaper that he cheated on her.

“There were times when Salman got physical with me, luckily without leaving any marks and I would go to work as if nothing happened,” said Rai in The Times of India interview.

Khan denied that he physically abused the former Miss World winner.

Onlookers said they once saw the actor banging on Rai’s apartment door at 3am in 2001 before they broke up, according to India Today.

After the incident, the two vowed to never work together again and some even stated they pretended not to know each other in public spaces. Aishwarya Rai is now happily married to actor Abhishek Bachchan and the couple have an adorable daughter named Aaradhya Bachchan, while Khan remains a bachelor till date.

Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor

While she is now a mum of two with hubby Saif Ali Khan, Kapoor previously had a five-year romance with actor Shahid Kapoor. The two started dating in 2004 a week after meeting each other and were always vocal about their relationship in interviews (remember the 2007 Koffee With Karan interview?).

However, during the filming of Jab We Met (2007) they started drifting apart. Kapoor met her now-husband Saif Ali Khan on the sets of her other film Tashan (2008), which she was filming simultaneously with Jab We Met, according to India Today.

A decade later, in an interview with Film Companion, Kapoor opened up and said that they went their separate ways after filming and “a lot happened in the making of this film and Tashan and our lives … And this beauty of a movie [Jab We Met] came out of it.”

Shahid Kapoor later dated Priyanka Chopra-Jonas and Vidya Balan and tied the knot with Mira Rajput in 2015. They have a daughter Misha and son Zain together.

Bipasha Basu and John Abraham

Known as the OG model-turned-actress in Bollywood, Bipasha Basu and John Abraham dated for almost 10 years before calling it quits. The beloved couple met on the sets of their erotic thriller film Jism in 2003 and stayed rock solid before breaking up in 2011. According to India Today, it is rumoured that Abraham’s infidelity and commitment issues were behind the split.

Basu gave a fiery interview to Times of India after the break-up. “Though no break-up is a good break-up, time heals everything, including broken friendships … But cheating, infidelity and deceit are generally tough to forgive,” said Basu.

The pair never worked together again. Both are now happily married to their spouses.

Apart from thriving film careers, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone also shared an interesting dating history. Let’s rewind back to 2007 when the two dated after working together in Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008). The couple then declared their young love to the world and Deepika even had Ranbir’s initials tattooed on the back of her neck. However, their two-year relationship ended with an ugly break-up. Rumour has it that Kapoor cheated on Padukone with another enigmatic starlet Katrina Kaif.

In a 2020 interview, Padukone shared details about a mysterious ex’s adultery, but she did not name names. “The first time he cheated on me, I thought there was something wrong with the relationship, or me. But when someone makes a habit of it, you know the problem lies with him,” she said.

Interestingly, though, the two decided to move on and remain good friends. After their break-up, Kapoor and Padukone worked together in two hit romcoms: Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013) and Tamasha (2015). Ranbir is now dating fellow actress Alia Bhatt, while Deepika is happily married to controversial actor Ranveer Singh since 2018.

Kapoor ended his relationship with Padukone after he met Kaif back in 2008. The lovebirds then took the world by storm after photos of their famous Ibiza vacation were leaked in 2013, confirming the rumours about their relationship. Once the “It couple” of Bollywood, they decided to end their relationship after six years. Some say the two fell out of love, while others speculate that Ranbir’s mum, Neetu Kapoor, was not too keen on Kaif.

While their break-up remains a private matter, the two are on friendly terms and have nothing but praise for each other. In an interview with Vogue India, Kaif even called their break-up a “blessing” as it made her able to “recognise my patterns, thought processes, and things that I had been so sure of my whole life”.
