The annual Venice International Film Festival has returned to the “floating city” once more. This year’s 78th edition opened on September 1 with films like Dune, Princess Diana-inspired Spencer and The Lost Daughter competing for the Golden Lion awards.

Besides highly anticipated films, what we also love is the fascinating fashion showcase at photocalls and premieres, as international stars disembark from water taxis in glamorous couture gowns and extravagant high jewellery. From rising actresses Zendaya and Anya Taylor-Joy, to red carpet regulars Penélope Cruz and Kate Hudson, we’ve shortlisted the most fittingly dressed celebrities so far.

One of the most-liked fashion moments on social media was Zendaya’s Venice film festival debut. The 25-year-old actress flaunted her flawless figure in a sexy nude Balmain high-slit dress along with Christian Louboutin pumps in the same tone and Bulgari jewellery.

Zendaya’s red carpet companion was American heartthrob Timothée Chalamet, who looked dapper in an all-black ensemble by Haider Ackermann with chic Cartier jewellery.

Dakota Johnson also dazzled ahead of the premiere of The Lost Daughter in a sequinned V-neck column gown featuring rosaline crystal details on top of a nude tulle underlay from Gucci.

We loved the Rodarte dress that Anya Taylor-Joy wore to the Last Night in Soho photocall, which she paired with a pair of silver Giuseppe Zanotti Harmony strappy sandals.

The Queen’s Gambit star also turned heads at the premiere in a shocking pink satin silk dress by Dior Haute Couture, topped off with a matching embroidered beret and pumps.

Kristen Stewart, whose portrayal of Princess Diana in the upcoming film Spencer has earned rave reviews, showed up in a black tweed jumpsuit from Chanel’s Métiers d’Art Collection along with Chanel Coco Crush accessories.

For the premiere, Stewart stepped out in an aqua pyjama-style chiffon tunic with a black belt ensemble from the Chanel Haute Couture autumn/winter 2021 collection.

Two real Spencers were present too: Lady Amelia Spencer and Lady Eliza Spencer, twin nieces of the late Princess Diana, made their red carpet debut at the Venice Film Festival in head-to-toe Alberta Ferretti.

One of our favourite outfits was that worn by relative new face, Milena Smit, who dressed in black and white body-hugging Balmain.

And how cool is Smit’s Marine Serre ensemble here? We want all the items, from head to toe.

Another Spanish actress, red carpet veteran Penélope Cruz, never disappoints with her classic Chanel choices, be it haute couture from the maison’s autumn 2021 collection or a carefree ready-to-wear design.

Kate Hudson went bold by wearing a black Mônot cut-out gown with a thigh slit on the left.

We also adored this elegant lace number from Valentino’s 2022 resort collection by creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli, which Hudson chose for the screening of Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon.

Last but not least, actress Rebecca Ferguson arrived for the premiere of Dune in a embroidered tulle gown from the Dior autumn/winter 2021 collection.
